وتجدر الإشارة إلى أنّ استهلاك المكمّلات الغذائية لفيتامين د يكون باستشارة الطبيب، وتتوفر هذه المكملات في شكلين، هما: د2؛ الذي يُعرف باسم الإرغوكالسيفيرول (بالإنجليزية: Ergocalciferol)؛ ويأتي من المصادر النباتية، ود3: ويسمى بالكوليكالسيفيرول (بالإنجليزية: Cholecalciferol)؛ ويأتي هذا النوع من المصادر الحيوانية، ويكون امتصاصه بالجسم بسهولة أكثر من د2 ويستمر في الجسم لفترة أطول،[٣٢] كما يمكن علاج نقص فيتامين د عن طريق الحقن، حيث يستمر أخذ حقنة صغيرة من فيتامين د لنحو ستة أشهر، ويعدُّ العلاج باستخدام هذه الطريقة جيداً للأشخاص الذين لا يفضّلون تناول الأدوية عن طريق الفم أو الذين قد يغفلون عن استهلاك أقراص فيتامين د.[١٥]
أظهرت دراسةٌ أوليّةٌ نُشِرت في مجلة Nutrients عام 2018 أجريت على 84 فتاة، ولوحظ أنّ اللاتي لم يمتلكنَ مستوياتٍ طبيعيّةً من فيتامين د؛ أي ما يعادل 30 نانوغراماً لكلّ مليلتر ارتفعت لديهنّ احتمالية الإصابة باضطرابات الدورة الشهرية بخمسة أضعاف مقارنةً مع اللاتي حصلنَ على هذه الكميّة.[٣٤]
